THE MUSIC WE PLAY

Jazz was the main form of popular music in the US, and the major part of the Western world, in the twenties and throughout the depression years. Some parts of this musical treasure has survived through big stars like Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong and Fats Waller. There is, however, a hidden treasure of great music from this period which for differing and largely incomprehensible reasons has been forgotten. We take great joy in exploring these gems from the past.

But we have no intention to become a dusty jazz museum - instead, we try to interpret this great music with vitality and joy, rather than mere copying the old stuff. It is up to our listeners to decide if we are successful!

"This is really something new and different" is what we often hear from our listeners - encouraging, considering the fact that our music emanates from days long gone! Such reactions makes us believe that we are on the right course in our efforts to bring this old but very vital music back to life for the audiences of today, of all ages

WHO ARE WE?

Klas Nilsson

Klas, our trumpet player, takes active part in the Gothenburg music scene in many different ways. Aside from the brilliant lead trumpet and smooth crooning he contributes to our band, he shows his versatility in as different styles as big band music Budddy Rich style, ethnic music of diffferent types and his own swing outfit Mobile Mama Jazz Band.

Tommy Nilsson

Tommy has played the trombone for ages. Already in his teens, he and a bunch of other young and aspiring musicians barnstormed the Danish countryside. Tommy is more of a swing man, but he is the guy behind most of our arrangements, and can play gutsy trombone in the spirit of J C Higginbotham. He is also  a proficient and devoted accordionist

Per Ekander

Per loves Fats Waller and Teddy Wilson. A long pianist life without bass and drums has made his left hand one of the most powerful in town. Started his piano career in obscurity in the Stockholm area, and later on played with Bosse Alftenius et al in Singapore (see below)

Hans Friberg

We needed a washboard when we started the band, and Hans was the obvious choice. Aside from his laundry talents, he plays excellent banjo ukulele Formby style and is a proficient blues shouter. Rumor has it that he had a rock career in the past

Dag Söderberg

Dag´s driving banjo is a mainstay in several Gothenburg bands. We are very happy that he finds time to play in The Novelty Band. No one can propel a rhythm section like Daggen.

Klas Wirdemo

Klas is a man of many talents. His driving and tasteful tuba playing is heard in several musical contexts in the area. His dream is to play in a tuba band á la Miles Davis; but finds himself right at home in our rhythm section as well.

Bosse Alftenius

Is the proud owner of a multitude of woodwind instruments, some of which he can actually play. Likes Johnny Dodds, Omer Simeon and Sidney Bechet. Freak when it comes to old jazz records. Teamed up with a.o. Per E in Singapore  in the 80´s in what must have been one of the most rotten bands of all time.
